TURNING THE “DISCOMFORT DIAL” DOWN
An ethical, qualified Hypnotherapist usually will not work with physical pain or chronic discomfort without the approval of an appropriate physician, for the simple reason that pain is more of a symptom than a condition. Pain or discomfort indicate that something is wrong somewhere, and that’s true whether the pain is physical or mental. It would be unprofessional, risky and irresponsible to treat anyone with undiagnosed pain or discomfort without clearance from a member of their health care team.
Hypnosis is a positive and useful method for managing pain.
Many years ago, before chemical anesthetics were available hypnosis was used to block the pain of amputations. Hypnotism has been utilized by many as a complimentary therapy for many centuries, and is becoming more widely accepted by the medical community. Because pain is a symptom it is usually advisable to reduce the discomfort but not eliminate it. The residual discomfort is often valuable, as it is a reminder that there is a physical condition present and warns him/her not to over do.
Q: How Does Hypnotherapy Help?
A: Hypnotherapeutic methods for achieving pain relief are numerous and varied and the choice may depend on the condition and personality of the patient. Suggestions may be direct or indirect, or may utilize anesthesia, guided imagery, hypnoanalysis, diversion or other techniques.
Attitude is a major factor. It is important that the individual accept that relief is possible. Sometimes tests which prove inconclusive, conflicting diagnoses, guilt, anger or other emotional problems instill levels of fear and confusion which may be dealt with through Hypnotherapy. Teaching the patient to use self-hypnosis techniques can be highly beneficial as they learn to manage or diminish their pain or discomfort to tolerable levels.
Q: How Many Visits Will I Need?
A: You will begin to notice some improvements with the first session. We provide an audio CD recording of the hypnosis session that you can continue to use daily for a period of 28-32 days to accomplish maximum benefits. You will return at least once more in approximately 10-14 days. We will review your progress and incorporate additional suggestions into a new hypnosis session to facilitate continued progress. Subsequent sessions are determined by the client and the Hypnotherapist based on the clients needs and progress.
If you are unable to come into one of our offices, for personal sessions, we can discuss your issues and needs over the telephone and then record an individually designed CD for you. House calls or in-hospital visits may also be a viable option.
